“It’s not just video games that have been inundated with zombies over the past decade,” said Alan Wen in his 5/5 review for Fandom. There were a lot of reviews that focused on the culture of remakes, and how they’re made, but one review decided to touch upon the zombies trend in pop culture over the past ten years. Don’t even get me started on the series revitalization with the first-person Resident Evil 7.” In parts, it doesn’t even feel like trendsetting Resident Evil 4, which brought an over-the-shoulder viewpoint and a heavier action focus to the series. Knoop added: “ Resident Evil 2 doesn’t feel like its original incarnation. “Here’s the thing with reviewing remakes of video games: Is it enough to simply list out the differences and similarities between each installment? I racked my brain trying to figure out an elegant way to compare and contrast, but quickly enough, an entirely different, far more modern game came to mind.” The Daily Dot’s review, written by writer Joseph Knoop (scored at 4.5/5), asked a very poignant question in regards to games remakes: “From top to bottom, this is already an early contender for Game of the Year 2019, and one of the greatest reasons ever to be a survival horror fan.” “There’s no excuse of ‘I’ve already played the original, so I don’t need to grab this one.’ You couldn’t be more wrong if that’s your line of thinking. “Don’t labor under the delusion that, if you played the original Resident Evil 2, that you should skip this one for some reason,” the review reads. And we’re only in the early stages of late-January. Shacknews gave the game a 9/10 (disclosure: Greenlit Content, also owns, counts Shacknews among its clients), said that we’re already looking at a GOTY contender with RE2. And the consensus seems to be it’s the standard bearer for what remakes should be about: bringing a game to modern standards, but keeping the ethos of what made the original so beloved in the first place.

Now, three-and-a-bit years later since official confirmation of its development, REMake 2 is about to hit on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this coming Friday.

It came a few months after the announcement at that year’s E3 of another remake, Final Fantasy VII, which might anecdotally be the most requested remake ever in games. This announcement followed some teasing and genuine calls for feedback from the Resident Evil team on whether a remake was worth pursuing.

A little over three years ago, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi announced “we do it” - they were remaking Resident Evil 2, first released on the original PlayStation 21 years ago this week.
